Balikpapan - Balikpapan (English spelling)

A city on the east coast of Kalimantan (Borneo), central Indonesia. It is located at the head of Balikpapan Bay facing the Makassar Strait. Population: 280,675 (1980), 624,033 (2018 estimate). A national highway connects it to Samarinda, the capital of East Kalimantan Province, and it also has an airport. Since the early 20th century, it has developed as a shipping port with the development of surrounding oil fields, and has become a major center of the Kalimantan oil industry. Huge refineries with a refining capacity of 1.9 million kiloliters line the coast. Mining and refining were first carried out by the Dutch company BPM, but the area was occupied by the Japanese army during World War II, and since 1960, Indonesian state-owned Pertamina has taken the lead. Development of nearby oil fields is also being carried out through joint ventures with Japan, and exploratory drilling of offshore oil fields is also being carried out. In recent years, timber has also been shipped actively.
