Mononobe [village] - Mononobe

Japanese: 物部[村] - ものべ
Mononobe [village] - Mononobe
A village in Kami County in the northeastern part of Kochi Prefecture. Population 3,392 (1995). Located in the source area of the Monobe River, it borders Tokushima Prefecture to the north and east. High mountains over 1,500 meters above sea level, including Mitsumine (1,893m), tower around the village. The Makiyama River, which is the upstream of the Monobe River, flows from the east, and the Kaminiro River flows from the north, flowing southwest through the center of the village, merging near Otochi and flowing into Nagase Dam Lake (Otochi Lake). The Makiyama River forms a gorge, and there are a few flat areas scattered along the shore of the Kaminiro River. The basins of both rivers are called Makiyama-go and Kaminiro-go, respectively, and transportation between the settlements located in the valleys was extremely inconvenient.
