A general term for seed plants that grow in seawater. Taxonomically, they are all classified as monocotyledonous plants in the order Saltwater Plants. It is thought that freshwater plants in this order, such as Hydrocharisaceae, Potamogetonaceae, and Polytrichum communes, evolved to adapt to life in seawater. There are about 100 species in 12 genera around the world, all of which form large colonies on the shallow seafloor near the coast and form seaweed beds together with seaweed. The most representative genera found in temperate zones such as Japan are the Zostera marina and Zostera quinqueradiata. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
