1837‐76 A gunfighter in the American West. His real name was James Butler Hickok. After working as a stagecoach driver and other roles, he served as a scout for the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war, he served as a sheriff in Abilene, a famous cattle herding town, and other parts of Kansas, where he defeated outlaws on the frontier one after another. He eventually participated in the Gold Rush in the Black Hills of the Dakota Territory, but was shot in the back while playing cards. His pistol is said to have had 27 notches from murders.
