Paradise Nuts (English spelling)

Japanese: パラダイスナッツ（英語表記）paradise nut

The seeds of several species of the genus Lecythis, including Lecythis usitata Miers, L. zabucajo Aubl., which are distributed in tropical regions of South America, are edible. They are also called sapucaia nut. All are tall trees that grow to 20-40m in height. The leaves are elliptical to elliptical-lanceolate and alternate. The flowers are bisexual, with six-lobed calyxes, six petals, and numerous stamens on an arched peduncle. The fruits are globular, woody, 15-25cm in diameter, usually with a protruding ring around the center, and when ripe, the skin at the top of the fruit separates into a lid-like circle, releasing 30-40 seeds from inside.
