Literary language in China. It means "written language" as opposed to baika. It is also called kobun. It was fairly fixed in the pre-Qin period and played the role of a common language. It was a literary term for the intellectual class, far removed from colloquial language, and held great influence until the 20th century. In Japan, it is roughly equivalent to classical Chinese literature, which is usually called "kanbun."
