Words - Wen-yan (English)
Literary language in China. It means "written language" as opposed to baika. It is also called kobun. It was fairly fixed in the pre-Qin period and played the role of a common language. It was a literary term for the intellectual class, far removed from colloquial language, and held great influence until the 20th century. In Japan, it is roughly equivalent to classical Chinese literature, which is usually called "kanbun."

Japanese:
中国における文語文。「書き言葉」の意で,白話に対する。古文ともいう。先秦時代にはかなり固定化し,共通語の役割を果すようになった。口語とはかけ離れた知識階級の文学用語として,20世紀まで大きな力を占めた。日本で通常「漢文」と称する中国古典文がほぼそれに相当する。
