The settling velocity of particles in a fluid varies depending on their particle size and density. In chemical processes, the difference in settling velocity is used to separate a group of particles of the same type but with different particle sizes into multiple groups by size (sizing), or to separate a group of particles of the same size but with different qualities by type (selection). In practice, size separation and selection are often performed simultaneously. There are two types of classification: wet, which uses water, and dry, which uses air. It is difficult to classify particles without any error using this operation, and the classified particles have a certain probability distribution. Special classification methods include flotation, magnetic separation, and dielectric separation.

This is the process by which particles of similar size and shape are separated when sediment is formed. This is also called sorting, and separation is most effective when the flow rate of the medium is constant and the sedimentation process is slow.
