Shimamiya was a palace located in Asuka from the 7th century to the mid-8th century. The first known account of this palace was that Prince Oama escaped from Omi on the eve of the Jinshin War, stayed overnight at Shimamiya, and reached Yoshino the next day. During the reign of Emperor Tenmu, it seems to have become the palace of the Crown Prince, Prince Kusakabe (Prince Hinami). In Volume 2 of the Manyoshu, there are 23 elegies composed by the Crown Prince's chamberlains at the time of Prince Kusakabe's death. According to these, Shimamiya had a large palace, and its eastern gate faced a waterfall. The palace also had the Magari Pond and the Kami Pond, where birds were allowed to roam freely, and in September 681 (the 10th year of the Tenmu era), a red turtle that had been presented as tribute from Shuho Province was released there.
