Kan Eguchi

Novelist and critic. Born in Kojimachi, Tokyo. Dropped out of the Department of English Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. In 1914 (Taisho 3), he helped edit "Warera" (We), became a disciple of Natsume Soseki, and formed friendships with Akutagawa Ryunosuke and others. In 1917, he published "A Story of Killing a Child" and the following year "Worker Kidnapping," establishing his status in the literary world. He later drew closer to Marxism, further deepening his critical realism, while also playing a leading role in the proletarian literature movement. During World War II, he consistently supported the people's front. After the war, he was active as a core member of the New Japan Literary Association and the Japan Democratic Literary Alliance. He also wrote many other works, including a collection of essays titled New Art and New Writers (1920), a full-length novel titled The Bride and a Horse (1948-49), and memoirs such as My Life as a Literary Author (1952-57) and Records of the Struggle of the Writers' Alliance (1965-67).

小説家、評論家。東京・麹町(こうじまち)に生まれる。東京帝国大学英文科中退。1914年（大正3）『我等(われら)』の編集に協力、夏目漱石(そうせき)の門に入り芥川龍之介(あくたがわりゅうのすけ)らと親交を結ぶ。17年『児(こ)を殺す話』、翌年『労働者誘拐』を発表して文壇的地位を確立した。のちマルクス主義へ接近、批判的リアリズムをさらに深める一方、プロレタリア文学運動の指導的立場にあって活躍した。第二次世界大戦下には人民戦線の立場を貫く。戦後は新日本文学会、日本民主主義文学同盟の中核として活動した。ほかに評論集『新芸術と新人』（1920）、長編小説『花嫁と馬一匹』（1948～49）、回想記に『わが文学半生記』（1952～57）、『たたかいの作家同盟記』（1965～67）など多数の著書がある。
