Characterology is the study of character or personality. Its origins date back to ancient Greece, and one side of the tradition was inherited by 16th-century French moralists. Deep understanding and insight can be seen in the essays and maxims of Montaigne, Pascal, La Bruyère, and others, and it is also interestingly depicted in literary works.
