A basin in the southwest of Miyazaki Prefecture, centered on Kobayashi City. It is surrounded by the Kyushu Mountains to the north, Mount Hinamori (1,344 meters) to the south, and hills to the east and west, with a widespread Shirasu plateau. The Ishigoori River, Hamanose River, and Tsujino-do River, tributaries of the Iwase River (a tributary of the Oyodo River), deeply erode the plateau. The basin is made up of alluvial fans and Shirasu plateaus, and the surface is covered by Kirishima volcanic ash. Livestock farming and field crops are thriving, as well as freshwater fish farming and shochu brewing, which use spring water from the foothills of Mount Kirishima.
