Murasaki Shikibu Diary Illustrated Scroll - Murasaki Shikibu Nikki Emaki

A picture scroll from the Kamakura period. The text of "The Diary of Murasaki Shikibu" has been abbreviated and altered to create a text, with illustrations added to each section. It is estimated that the original was about 10 volumes and 60 to 70 sections. Currently, 24 sections of text (one of which is a copy) and 24 sections of pictures (22 of which have the same scene in the text and the picture) remain, and are housed at the Fujita Museum in Osaka, the Goto Museum in Tokyo (both national treasures), the Hinohara Museum (important cultural property), and other institutions. The pictures are in the style of the Heian period's "The Tale of Genji Picture Scroll," but are characterized by witty and colorful compositions, with diagonal lines used vertically and horizontally to depict the architectural floats. The depictions of the people also show movement and expression, and while traditional faces with inverted eyes and hooked noses can be seen, a new style of facial expression with a touch of realism dominates. The calligraphy style of the legend indicates the Gokyogoku style, and the painting is thought to have been the work of a court painter who skillfully incorporated the trends of the new era into traditional styles. Based on the style of the calligraphy and painting, it is estimated to have been produced in the first half of the 13th century (1220-1240).
