Being and Time (English: Sein und Zeit)

This is the major work of German existential philosopher Heidegger. Published in 1927. Following an introduction on themes and methods, it consists of two parts: "A Preliminary Fundamental Analysis of Dasein" and "Dasein and Temporality." The first half shows that the fundamental structure of human beings, that is, Dasein, is "being-in-the-world," and highlights the figure of inauthentic existence, which loses itself in the technological and instrumental world of the environment and lives as "das Man." In contrast, the second half distinguishes authentic existence, which lives resolutely in the present as a moment, recovering itself from the past through anxiety and awareness of death and pioneering into the future, from inauthentic existence, which lives in the present in a dispersed manner, forgetting the past and anticipating the future. This is the book that made Heidegger an instant favorite of his time.

ドイツの実存哲学者ハイデッガーの主著。1927年刊。テーマや方法に関する序論に続いて、「現存在の予備的基礎分析」と「現存在と時間性」という二つの部分からなる。前半では人間すなわち現存在の根本構造が「世界―内―存在」であることが示され、また技術的、道具的な環境世界のうちで自己を失って「ひと」das Manとして生きる非本来的な実存の姿が浮き彫りにされる。これに対して後半では、不安や死の自覚を介して、過去からの自己を取り戻し、未来へと先駆しながら、瞬間としての現在において決意的に生きる本来的実存が、過去を忘却し、未来を予期しながら、分散的に現在に生きる非本来的実存から区別される。ハイデッガーを一躍時代の寵児(ちょうじ)にさせた書である。
