Year of death: 25 March 1621 (1621.5.16) Year of birth: Eiroku 11 (1568) A Rinzai sect monk in the early Edo period. He also called himself Fuhoko. A native of Aki District, Ise (Mie Prefecture). He inherited the teachings of Jion Dainin (one theory says Bunshuku Kiyohiko) and lived at Muryoju-ji Temple in Ise. He later became the devout follower of Kato Kiyomasa and travelled down to Kyushu, where he attended the Bunroku-Keicho War. In 1600 (Keicho 5), he became the 227th abbot of Tofuku-ji Temple, and in 1606, he was elevated to Nanzen-ji Temple (generation unknown). In 1616, he was asked by Toyotomi Hideyori to write the inscription on the bell of Hoko-ji Temple. This is known as the trigger for the Siege of Osaka and the downfall of the Toyotomi clan, as the phrase "National peace and prosperity" in the inscription angered the Tokugawa side as it was seen as a misinterpretation of Tokugawa Ieyasu's name. <Works> "Hoko-ji Bell Inscription and the Five Mountain Monks' Review" (Dai Nippon Bukkyo Zensho Volume 119) <References> Mori Daikyo "Kinko Zenrin Sotan" (Kiyozumi Ishii) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
