An old town in Mima County, in the north-central part of Tokushima Prefecture. The main settlement is on a river terrace on the south bank of the Yoshino River, near the confluence with the Sadamitsu River. Poultry farming is the main agricultural industry. It is a distribution center for timber and tobacco, and also has a sawmill. It is on the Tokushima Line and is the trailhead for Mt. Tsurugi. 徳島県中北部,美馬郡の旧町。主集落は吉野川の南岸,貞光川との合流点付近の河岸段丘上にある。養鶏が農業の中心。木材,タバコの集散地で,製材所もある。徳島線が通じ,剣山への登山口。2005年3月美馬郡半田町,一宇村と合併し町制,つるぎ町となる。45.40km2。5877人(2003)。
