Formerly Takata City. Located in the lower reaches of the Arakawa River. A junction of the Hokuriku Kaido and Hokkoku Kaido roads since ancient times. In the Middle Ages, the Uesugi clan built a castle on Kasugayama. In the early Edo period, it became a castle town of the Matsudaira clan with 600,000 koku of rice, and from the mid-Edo period onwards, it became a castle town of the Sakakibara clan with 150,000 koku of rice. Before World War II, it flourished as a military city. It was called the "City of Snow" and is also known as the birthplace of skiing in Japan. It was incorporated as a city in 1911 ( Meiji 44 ). In 1971 , it merged with Naoetsu City to form Joetsu City.

Takata

[1] A former district in the central north of Hiroshima Prefecture. The area was centered around Aki-Takata City. [2] The name of a village in Toshima District, Musashi Province. The area covers the area from Totsuka-cho in Shinjuku Ward to Takada and Mejiro in Toshima Ward, Tokyo.

[1] 〘名〙 土地の高いところにつくられた田。古くは「あげた」とも称した。→上田(あげた)・下田(くぼた)。※古事記(712)上(兼永本訓)「其(そ)の兄高田(タカタ)を作らば汝の命は下田(しもた)を営みたまへ」[2] 新潟県上越市の地名。旧高田市。荒川の下流域にある。古くから北陸街道、北国街道の分岐点。中世、上杉氏が春日山に築城。江戸初期、松平氏六〇万石の城下町となり、江戸中期以後は榊原氏一五万石の城下町となる。第二次世界大戦前は軍都として栄えた。「雪の都」といわれ、日本スキーの発祥地としても知られる。明治四四年(一九一一)市制。昭和四六年(一九七一)直江津市と合体して上越市となる。

たかた【高田】

[一] 広島県中北部にあった旧郡。安芸高田市を中心とする地域。[二] 武蔵国豊島郡の村名。現在の東京都新宿区戸塚町から豊島区高田、目白にかけての一帯にあたる。

たかだ【高田】

(「たかた」とも) 姓氏の一つ。
