The southeasternmost state of the United States. Abbreviated as Fla. or FL. Most of the state belongs to the Florida Peninsula, and except for some hilly areas, it is made up of low-lying coastal plains and marshes. It has a subtropical climate, and is known for producing grapefruit and oranges, taking advantage of the warm climate. It also produces a lot of tobacco, sugarcane, and corn. It also produces marine products such as sponges, oysters, and shrimp. It is one of the leading producers of phosphate rock in the United States. Its main industries are agricultural and forestry processing, including pulp, paper, sugar, tobacco, chemicals, printing, and shipbuilding. There are many famous resorts on the Atlantic coast, such as Miami and West Palm Beach, and tourism, including Disney World, is an important industry in the state. At the southern end is Everglades National Park, and the space station at Cape Canaveral is well known. A Spanish colony was established in St. Augustine in 1565, and it became a US territory in 1821 after passing through Spanish and British colonies. It joined the Union in 1845. 米国南東端の州。略称Fla.，FL。大部分がフロリダ半島に属し，一部丘陵地がある以外は低平な海岸平野と沼沢地が広がる。亜熱帯気候で，温暖な気候を利用して，グレープフルーツ，オレンジの生産が知られ，ほかにタバコ，サトウキビ，トウモロコシなどの産が多い。海綿，カキ，エビなどの海産もある。リン鉱石の産は全米有数。工業は農産加工，林産加工が主で，パルプ，製紙，製糖，タバコ製造，化学，印刷，造船など。大西洋岸にマイアミ，ウェスト・パーム・ビーチなど著名な保養地が多く，ディズニー・ワールドなど観光業が州の重要産業となっている。南端にエバーグレーズ国立公園があり，ケープ・カナベラルの宇宙基地は著名。1565年セント・オーガスティンにスペイン植民地が創設され，スペイン領，英領を経て1821年米領。1845年連邦加入。州都タラハシー。最大都市マイアミ。13万8887km²。1989万3297人（2014）。
