Frequency spectrum

A normal signal waveform can be seen as a composite of many different sine waves. In this case, the amplitude or amplitude and phase of the frequency components of each sine wave as a function of frequency, expressed as a complex number, is called a frequency spectrum. The absolute value of the complex number represents the amplitude of the sine wave of that frequency, and the argument represents the phase. A periodic waveform is expressed as a composite of sine waves that only have frequencies that are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. This frequency spectrum is called a line spectrum. In contrast, a waveform with finite energy has continuous frequency components.

通常の信号波形は，多数の異なった正弦波が合成されたものと見ることができる。このとき周波数の関数として，各正弦波の周波数成分の振幅，または振幅および位相を複素数によって表したものを周波数スペクトルという。複素数の絶対値がその周波数の正弦波の振幅を表し，偏角が位相を表す。周期波形は，基本周波数の整数倍の周波数のみをもつ正弦波の合成として表される。この周波数スペクトルを線スペクトルという。これに対し，有限なエネルギーを有する波形は連続的な周波数成分をもつ。
