Meaning "one who follows the secular world." A school of materialism in ancient India, represented by Ajita, who was chronologically close to Gautama Buddha. It denied the existence of the soul, and recognized only the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind, and the void in which they exist, as real things. It also denied the results of karma, and advocated worldlyism and hedonism, and its views are also called Cārvāka. Indian materialism continued until modern times.
