[Born] Tempo 14 (1843), Chiba Died May 24, 1913. Sculptor in Tokyo. Born into a farming family in Chiba Prefecture. He studied Western-style sculpture under V. Ragusa at the Kobu Bijutsu Gakko (Technical Art School), and became a pioneer of Western-style sculpture in the Meiji period. He is also known as Japan's first marble sculptor. He later taught the next generation of sculptors, and among his pupils were such outstanding artists as Taketaro Shinkai and Shikai Kitamura.
