The second emperor of the Later Tang dynasty of China during the Five Dynasties. Reigned 926-933. A Hu man from the north, he was the adopted son of Li Keyong and took the name Li Siyuan. During the reign of Zhuangzong, he was in charge of commanding the entire army as General of Horse and Infantry of the Foreign Han, and played an active role in the destruction of the Later Liang dynasty and the founding of the Later Tang dynasty, but was shunned by Zhuangzong and fell from grace for a time. When Zhuangzong was killed in a war, Mingzong was supported in his place and took the throne. Mingzong marked a period in the Five Dynasties by strengthening the Imperial Guard, the core of the Imperial Guard, and by carrying out a nationwide rice field survey to equalize taxes and solidify the financial base.
