Macpherson, James

Japanese: マクファーソン(英語表記)Macpherson, James
Macpherson, James
Born: 27 October 1736, Ruthven, Inverness
[died] February 17, 1796, Belville. English poet. He was recognized for his translation of Gaelic and Ernestic poetry collected in the Scottish Highlands, Fragments of Ancient Poetry (1760). He then translated the 3rd century Gaelic poet Ossian, publishing Fingal (62) and Temora (63). These works, which captured the interest of the medieval period at the time, won him acclaim not only in England but also in Europe, and had a great influence on the Romantic era that followed. Subsequent research has revealed that he edited Ossian's original poems with great freedom, inserting passages of his own creation.
