Born December 27, 1896 in Mansfield, Ohio
[Died] March 18, 1956. Lucas, Ohio. American novelist. He served in World War I while attending Cornell University. After being discharged, he received an honorary bachelor's degree from the same university, but did not return to his studies. Instead, he went into journalism and wrote music and theater criticism, and stayed in France until just before World War II. After returning to the United States, he ran a large farm near his hometown. His works include the four-part series The Green Bay Tree (1924), Possessions (25), Early Autumn (26, Pulitzer Prize), A Good Woman (27), The Rains Came (37), which is set in India, and Malabar Farm (48), which is based on his experience of farm management.
