Born: January 21, 1804 in Vienna
[Died] February 8, 1871. Munich. German painter, illustrator, and printmaker born in Austria. The last representative writer of the German Romantic period. He studied under Schnorr and Kraft at the Vienna Art School. He was active in Munich from 1828 onwards. He was initially influenced by P. Cornelius, but established his own style and expressed the world of fairy tales, which are unique to Germany, in a creative way within a poetic mood. His representative work is "Symphonie" (1852, Neue Pinakothek, Munich). His woodblock prints and woodblock illustrations for fairy tales published in magazines are also popular for their humorous expressions, and his representative work is the illustrations for Scheler's "Kokin Doyoshu" (1848-1849).

オーストリア生れのドイツの画家，挿絵画家，版画家。ドイツ・ロマン派最後の代表的作家。ウィーンの美術学校でシュノルおよびクラフトに師事。 1828年以後ミュンヘンで活動。初め P.コルネリウスの影響下にあったが，独自の作風を確立してドイツ特有のメルヘンの世界を詩的情調のうちに造形的に表現。代表作は『シンフォニー』 (1852，ミュンヘン，ノイエ・ピナコテーク) 。また雑誌に発表した木版画や童話の木版挿絵はユーモアに満ちた表現で親しまれており，その代表作はシェーラーの『古今童謡集』の挿絵 (48～49) 。
