Born: 1838. Santo
[Died] 1927. Paris, France. Art critic. He started out as a political reporter, and in 1868 founded the republican newspaper La Tribune. He later became acquainted with Impressionist painters, and was one of the first to understand their new art. His book Les Peintres impressioniste (1878) was the first critical work written about Impressionism. He also wrote about the history of Impressionism, Manet and Renoir, and Japanese art.

フランスの美術評論家。初め政治記者をつとめ，1868年には共和系の新聞『ラ・トリビューン』を創刊。その後，印象派の画家たちと交遊，彼らの新しい芸術の最初の理解者の一人となる。『印象派の画家たち』 Les Peintres impressioniste (1878) は，印象派について書かれた最初の批評的著作となった。その他，印象派史，マネ，ルノアール論，さらに日本美術についても著作を残している。
