…These duties were similar to those of the provincial government offices, such as laborers for the transportation of taxes and guarding the buildings and halls of the powerful temples and shrines, and similar to those of the Imperial Court, such as taxes for the various expenses of the annual events of the powerful temples and shrines. Among these duties of the powerful temples and shrines, the duties of the In (emperors), who controlled national politics after the Insei period, were imposed on each province. These were called "Inji" and "In'yaku" and were considered as important as imperial affairs. In the Kamakura period, the Kamakura shogunate imposed the expenses of its public affairs on the vassals of each province, and these were called "Kuji" (Kanto public affairs) and were as important as the "Oban-yaku" (guard duties). …
