Also known as a glockenspiel, it is an idiophone consisting of rectangular metal plates with fixed pitches arranged in two rows like a xylophone. The range is usually about two octaves. The metal plates are supported by felt to improve resonance. It is played with mallets, which are thin rods with brass or plastic balls attached to the ends. Originally it was a collection of bells, but it is thought that improvements were made after the 18th century under the influence of Southeast Asian idiophones (such as the saron in gamelan). As its use in orchestras spread, improvements were made modeled on the piano, with instruments equipped with a row of resonating cylinders attached under the metal plate and instruments equipped with foot pedals to eliminate the lingering sound. On the other hand, instruments with metal plates arranged inside a frame modeled after the ancient Greek lyre are called bell lyres. The frame is supported by the left hand and the stick is struck with the right hand, making them convenient for performances while marching. However, because it has many overtones, it is probably not suitable as a melodic instrument for playing fast passages.
