It is the capital of the county of the same name, located on Wexford Lough, at the southern end of the east coast of Ireland. It has a population of 11,417 (1981). The name comes from the Danes, who founded the town around the 9th century, and means a shallow inlet that dries up at low tide. Due to its proximity to England, it became a colony of England in the 12th century, and at the end of the 18th century it became a base for the independence movement. In the hinterland, agriculture and livestock farming are thriving, producing barley for malt, sugar beets, dairy cows, pigs, and sheep, and the city's manufacturing industry is mainly agricultural-related, including food manufacturing, dairy products, and fertilizers. In recent years, the city has also focused on the manufacture of clothing and fishing equipment. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
