Mohs hardness scale

The standard established by F. Mohs [1773-1839] to determine the hardness of minerals. The following set of minerals is used as the standard minerals, and the relative hardness observed when the minerals are scratched against each other is determined using this scale, which is called the Mohs scale of hardness. The order of hardness from 1 to 10 is talc, gypsum, calcite, fluorite, apatite, orthoclase, quartz, topaz, corundum, and diamond. When using everyday objects as substitutes, a copper plate of 3, glass of 5.5, and a knife of 6.

F.モース〔1773-1839〕が鉱物の硬度をきめるために設定した基準。次の１組の鉱物を標準鉱物とし，これを基準に鉱物どうし互いに傷をつけあったときみられる相対的な硬さで硬度を定め，これをモース硬度と呼ぶ。硬度１から10までで順に滑石，セッコウ，方解石，蛍石，リン灰石，正長石，石英，黄玉，鋼玉，ダイヤモンド。身近にあるもので代用するときは，銅板３，ガラス5.5，小刀６。
