The standard established by F. Mohs [1773-1839] to determine the hardness of minerals. The following set of minerals is used as the standard minerals, and the relative hardness observed when the minerals are scratched against each other is determined using this scale, which is called the Mohs scale of hardness. The order of hardness from 1 to 10 is talc, gypsum, calcite, fluorite, apatite, orthoclase, quartz, topaz, corundum, and diamond.
