A city in the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. It occupies the Matsue Plain between Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi, the eastern part of the Shimane Peninsula, and the southern shore of Lake Shinji. The central town on the eastern shore of Lake Shinji was a small fishing village in the early modern period, but in 1607, Yoshiharu Horio built a castle on Kamedayama, and in 1638, when the Matsudaira clan was granted the title, it developed into a castle town. The Ohashi River flows through the center of the city, and traces of the castle town remain. After the San'in Main Line opened in 1908, it became the economic and cultural center of the surrounding farming, mountain, and fishing villages. In addition to traditional industries such as woodworking in Saika Town, Japanese sweets in Horo and Nakahara Towns, Rakuzan ware, and Yakumo lacquerware, industrial parks have been developed since the city was designated a new industrial city in 1966, and factories producing electrical machinery, office equipment, and other products have been established, and in recent years, the industry has been becoming more sophisticated. The area is served by the JR San'in Main Line, the Kishiwada Line, the Ichibata Electric Railway, the San'in Expressway, and National Route 9. It is home to the Izumo Kokubunji Temple ruins (historic site), Matsue Castle, Lafcadio Hearn's former home, Kanden-an and other historical sites, as well as Shimane University. In 2005, Lake Nakaumi and Lake Shinji were registered as Ramsar wetlands. In March 2005, the towns of Kashima, Shimane, Mihonoseki, Tamayu, Shinji, Yatsuka and Yakumo in Yatsuka County were incorporated, and in August 2011, Higashiizumo Town in Yatsuka County was incorporated. 島根県東部の市。1889年市制。県庁所在地。宍道(しんじ)湖と中海にはさまれた松江平野および島根半島東部,宍道湖南岸一帯を占める。宍道湖東岸の中心市街は近世初期には小漁村であったが,1607年堀尾吉晴が亀田山に城を築き,1638年松平氏が封じられて以後城下町として発展。市街中央を大橋川が流れ,城下町の面影が残る。1908年山陰本線開通後,周辺農山漁村の経済・文化の中心となった。雑賀(さいか)町の木工業,母衣(ほろ),中原両町の和菓子,楽山焼,八雲塗など伝統工業のほか,1966年の新産業都市指定以降は工業団地が造成され,電気機械,事務機器などの工場が立地し,近年は産業の高度化が図られている。JR山陰本線,木次線,一畑電車,山陰自動車道,国道9号線が通じる。出雲国分寺跡(史跡),松江城,ラフカディオ・ハーン旧宅,菅田庵(かんでんあん)などの史跡,島根大学がある。2005年に中海,宍道湖がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2005年3月八束郡鹿島町,島根町,美保関町,玉湯町,宍道町,八束町,八雲村を,2011年8月八束郡東出雲町を編入。572.99km2。20万8613人(2010)。
