Matsue [city] - Matsue

Japanese: 松江[市] - まつえ
Matsue [city] - Matsue
A city in the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. It occupies the Matsue Plain between Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi, the eastern part of the Shimane Peninsula, and the southern shore of Lake Shinji. The central town on the eastern shore of Lake Shinji was a small fishing village in the early modern period, but in 1607, Yoshiharu Horio built a castle on Kamedayama, and in 1638, when the Matsudaira clan was granted the title, it developed into a castle town. The Ohashi River flows through the center of the city, and traces of the castle town remain. After the San'in Main Line opened in 1908, it became the economic and cultural center of the surrounding farming, mountain, and fishing villages. In addition to traditional industries such as woodworking in Saika Town, Japanese sweets in Horo and Nakahara Towns, Rakuzan ware, and Yakumo lacquerware, industrial parks have been developed since the city was designated a new industrial city in 1966, and factories producing electrical machinery, office equipment, and other products have been established, and in recent years, the industry has been becoming more sophisticated. The area is served by the JR San'in Main Line, the Kishiwada Line, the Ichibata Electric Railway, the San'in Expressway, and National Route 9. It is home to the Izumo Kokubunji Temple ruins (historic site), Matsue Castle, Lafcadio Hearn's former home, Kanden-an and other historical sites, as well as Shimane University. In 2005, Lake Nakaumi and Lake Shinji were registered as Ramsar wetlands. In March 2005, the towns of Kashima, Shimane, Mihonoseki, Tamayu, Shinji, Yatsuka and Yakumo in Yatsuka County were incorporated, and in August 2011, Higashiizumo Town in Yatsuka County was incorporated. Area: 572.99 km2 . Population: 208,613 (2010).
