The capital of Kedah state in the northwest of the Malaysian peninsula. It is in the center of a vast rice paddy region and is famous for its beautiful mosque. Nearly half of the city's population of 125,000 (1991) is Malay, making it one of the cities with a low ratio of Chinese to other cities in the country, but there are many Chinese shops in the center. If double rice cropping becomes widespread as a result of the success of the Muda River Basin Agricultural Development Plan, it is expected that income levels in the surrounding farming villages will rise and the city's hinterland will expand.
