…In Japan, systematic Russian language education began at the Orthodox Theological Seminary, which was opened in Tokyo by the missionary Nikolai in 1873 (Meiji 6), and at the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages, which was established by the government the following year. The foundations of scientific research into Russian language based on comparative linguistics were laid by Yasugi Sadatoshi, and it was further developed by Igeta Sadatoshi (1907-80), Kimura Shoichi (1915-86), and others. After World War II, reflecting the increasing importance of Russian in the international community, Russian language education in Japan also reached an unprecedented scale, but there are still only a few universities in Japan that offer specialized courses up to graduate school. …
