A general term for patterned fabrics with colorful embossed patterns. The word originates from the Latin brocare (meaning to decorate with patterns). Originally it was a luxurious, thick silk fabric with a double weft weave using several different colored threads and gold and silver threads. The traditional Japanese Nishiki is an example of this. Currently, single-ply jacquard patterned weaves are more common, and similar fibers are used. Applications include evening dresses, other formal wear, women's party wear, interior decoration fabrics, tablecloths, curtains, etc. Examples include Nishiki, Ito-nishiki, Karaori, Atsuita, Kinran, Ginran, and Shuchin.
