Kamiyain - Kamiyain

A government-run paper mill established in the Nara period. It is also called "Shiokuin" or "Kanyain." Since it was expanded and relocated to the banks of the Kamiya River in Kyoto during the Daido era (806-810) of the Heian period, it has produced excellent paper that has earned it the reputation of being "Kamiyagami." It also played a leading role in papermaking technology, and it is believed that the flow-filtering method for Japanese paper was probably developed here. At the end of the Heian period, power shifted from the nobility to the samurai class, and excellent locally produced paper also became available, so its status declined and it began to focus solely on paper refining.

奈良時代に設けられた官立製紙所。「しおくいん」「かんやいん」ともいう。平安時代の大同(だいどう)年間（806～810）に、京都の紙屋川のほとりに拡充移設されて以来、紙屋紙(かんやがみ)の名声をもつ優秀な紙を漉(す)いた。製紙技術の指導的役割も果たし、和紙の流し漉(ず)き法もおそらくここで開発されたと思われる。平安末期に権力が貴族から武家の手に移り、また優れた地方産紙も出回るようになったためその地位は低下し、もっぱら漉き返しを行うようになった。
