Nishikigawa River

Japanese: 錦川 - にしきがわ
Nishikigawa River

A river that flows east through eastern Yamaguchi Prefecture and empties into Hiroshima Bay. It is the largest river in the prefecture and is also called the Iwakuni River. Its drainage basin covers the northeastern area of Iwakuni City and Shunan City, with an area of 889.8 square kilometers and a length of 110.3 kilometers. The main stream originates near Azamigadake on the border with Shimane Prefecture, flows south through the Kano Basin, creates a deep gorge near the Susuma Plateau, meanders, then turns northeast, merges with the tributary Usa River, and flows southeastward. It is a complex flood-prone river. In the downstream, it enters the Iwakuni region from the Mikawa area of Iwakuni City (formerly Mikawa Town, Kuga County), where a small valley bottom plain can be seen, and at the mouth of Iwakuni, it forms a typical delta plain and flows into Hiroshima Bay in the Akinada Sea. National Route 187, the Sanin Sanyo Link Road, and the third-sector Nishikigawa Railway run along the narrow river valley. The Koudou Dam and Sugano Dam were built in the middle reaches of the river to ensure water for the Shunan industrial area.
