The conventional wisdom regarding the Ogasawara clan's archery and horse-riding ceremonies, based on the theory in the Ogasawara Family Tree in the Kansei Shoshu Shokafu and Zoku Gunsho Ruiju, is that in the early Kamakura period, Ogasawara Nagakiyo, the last of the Seiwa Genji clan, taught Minamoto no Yoritomo and Yoriie the secrets of archery and horse-riding, and that Sadamune, the last of the five generations of Nagakiyo, presented Emperor Go-Daigo with a book called Shushinron, and his son Masanaga became the teacher of Ashikaga Takauji. Since then, the Ogasawara clan, the Shinano shugo, served as the instructors of archery and horse-riding for successive shoguns, with Nagamoto serving as the instructor for Yoshimitsu, Masayasu serving as the instructor for Yoshinori, and Mochinaga serving as the instructor for Yoshimasa. However, all of these traditions were advocated by the Ogasawara clan in the Edo period, and are doubtful as historical fact.

…武家諸礼式，弓馬礼法の一流。小笠原氏の弓馬礼式に関して，従来の通説では，《寛政重修諸家譜》や《続群書類従》に収める〈小笠原系図〉の所説によって，鎌倉初期に清和源氏の末小笠原長清が，源頼朝･頼家に弓馬の秘法を伝授し，また長清5代の末貞宗は後醍醐天皇に《修身論》を献じ，その子政長が足利尊氏の師となり，以来，信濃守護小笠原家は長基が義満の師範，政康が義教の師範，持長が義政の師範を務めるなど，歴代将軍の弓馬師範となったとされている。しかしこうした伝承は，いずれも江戸時代の小笠原家によって唱えられたものであり，史実としては疑わしい。…
