Born: August 16, 1894, New York, USA [Died] January 10, 1980, Washington DC, USA American labor leader. Born in a slum in New York, he became a plumber's apprentice in 1910 and soon joined the labor union movement. From 1922 to 1934, he was the representative of the AFL Plumbers local union. From 1934 to 1939, he was the head of the New York State Federation of Labor. From 1939 to 1952, he was the AFL treasurer, and in 1952, he became president. In December 1955, the AFL and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) merged, and he became president of the AFL-CIO. He maintained the traditions of the AFL and took a conservative and anti-communist stance in policy. Although he was a Democrat, he did not support Democratic candidate G. McGovern in the 1972 presidential election, and led the AFL-CIO to resolve to be neutral. In September 1979, he resigned as president.
