1450‐1528 German humanist. He was a professor at the University of Heidelberg, but resigned his position in 1501 and thereafter lived mainly in Strasbourg. He worked as a patriotic journalist, and his "Essays on the History of Germany" (1505) was the first book on German history, and his "Complaints of the German People" (1511) attacked the ignorance of the clergy and their exploitation by Rome.
