German humanist. He was a professor at the University of Heidelberg, but resigned his position in 1501 and thereafter lived mainly in Strasbourg. He worked as a patriotic journalist, and his "Essays on the History of Germany" (1505) was the first book on German history, and his "Complaints of the German People" (1511) attacked the ignorance of the clergy and their exploitation by Rome. He was initially sympathetic to the Reformation, but remained Catholic until the end. [Kenjiro Nakamura]

ドイツの人文主義者。ハイデルベルク大学教授をつとめたが，1501年その職を辞し，以後主としてシュトラスブルクに住んだ。愛国的ジャーナリストとして活動し，その《ドイツ史略》(1505)は最初のドイツ史の書であり，《ドイツ国民の不平》(1511)では，聖職者の無教養とローマによる搾取を攻撃した。宗教改革にははじめは好意を示したが，最後までカトリックにとどまった。【中村賢二郎】
