Matsukazesou (Japanese pine wind grass) - Matsukazesou (English spelling) Boenninghausenia japonica
A perennial plant of the Rutaceae family. It grows in forests and in the shade of trees in mountainous areas in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, west of the Kanto region. The stem is cylindrical, 40-80 cm tall, and green with a tinge of powdery white. The leaves are trifoliate, pinnate, compound, with transparent oil spots, and fragrant. The leaflets are obovate, entire, and have rounded tips. In summer, the panicles grow terminally and produce many small white flowers. The calyx and petals are four, both oblong. The petals are about 4 cm long, but the sepals are much smaller. There are six to eight stamens, some longer than others, that protrude beyond the flower. The ovary has a stalk, and the capsule is divided into four egg-shaped fruits. The seeds are dark brown and wrinkled on the surface. Only one other species of this genus is known from India to China.
