A city and the capital of the province of New Brunswick, Canada. It is located on the midstream of the Saint John River. It has a population of 47,560 (2001). It was named in 1785 after the second son of the then King George III of England. It is the central city of the Saint John River Valley and developed as a lumber distribution center and fur trading market. In addition to lumber, woodworking, and leather industries, it is also home to the provincial government and educational institutions, and despite being a small city, it is home to the University of New Brunswick and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Immigrants from Nova Scotia founded the village in 1740, and during the American Revolution in 1783, 6,000 people who pledged allegiance to Britain fled to the United States and immigrated there.
