This type of cancer develops in the kidney, and is more common in older people, with the incidence rate in men being two to three times that of women. In 1997, 3,520 people died from kidney cancer. The three main symptoms are hematuria, kidney pain, and abdominal masses, but in most cases, at least one of these symptoms will appear. It has also been found that renal pelvis cancer is more common in people who regularly use the painkiller phenacetin. Recently, there has been an increase in cases where the cancer is discovered by chance without any symptoms. Clinical tests often show an increase in erythrocyte sedimentation rate (the rate at which red blood cells settle), abnormal serum proteins, and liver dysfunction. Diagnosis is made by pyelography, CT scan, ultrasound, angiography, etc. The only way to cure the disease is to remove the kidney surgically. For renal pelvis cancer, anticancer drugs such as cisplatin are effective, but for other types of cancer, anticancer drugs do not improve survival rates. Gene therapy has also been performed, but it has not been very effective. Sex hormone therapy, immunotherapy, and interferon administration are also effective in some cases.

腎臓にできる癌(がん)で，比較的高齢者に多く，男性は女性の２〜３倍の発生率がある。1997年の腎癌による死亡者は3520人。　血尿，腎臓の痛み，腹部腫瘤(しゅりゅう)が三大症状だが，ほとんどの場合，このどれか一部の症状が現れる。鎮痛薬のフェナセチン常用者に腎盂癌の多いこともわかっている。　最近では，無症状で偶然発見される場合も増えている。臨床的な検査では，赤沈（赤血球の沈降する速度）が上昇する，血清タンパクの異常，肝機能障害などの結果が出ることが多い。腎盂造影，CTスキャン，超音波，血管造影検査などによって診断を行う。　根治するには手術による腎臓摘出しかない。腎盂癌であれば制癌薬のシスプラチンなども有効だが，それ以外では制癌薬を使っても生存率は向上しない。遺伝子治療も行われたが，あまり効果はなかった。一部では性ホルモン療法，免疫療法，インターフェロン投与も有効である。
