1584‐1647 Governor-General of the Netherlands. The youngest son of William I, Count of Nassau and Prince of Orange. He received military training from his half-brother Maurice and organized a rational army based on mathematics. He fought against the Spanish army in various places, starting with the Battle of Nieuwpoort in 1600. In 1625 he became commander-in-chief of the Dutch Republic army, and after Maurice's death he became governor-general as his successor. He immediately began to recapture cities occupied by the Spanish army, and one after another he recaptured important cities such as 's-Hertogenbosch, Maastricht, Roermond, and Breda, earning him the nickname "Conqueror of Cities."
