A state in southern Brazil. Area: 199,544 km2, population: 8,712,800 (1995). Capital: Curitiba. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, it lies between latitudes 22°30' and 26°43' south. A coastal mountain range with an elevation of nearly 2,000 m (highest point: Mount Paraná, 1,962 m) runs north to south along the Atlantic coast, and inland, a plateau with an elevation of about 900 m spreads out, decreasing in altitude to the west as it reaches the Paraná River. It borders Paraguay and Argentina across the river. The average annual temperature in Curitiba is 17.2°C, and temperatures can drop below zero between June and August.
