In pre-Islamic Arabian tribal society, the individuality of infants and women who were not of military value was not recognized, so only patrilineal male relatives ('aṣaba), who had the duty to protect their families, could be involved in inheritance. Muhammad made many reforms to the inheritance system that was rooted in this tribal society.
