Died: August 16, 1977. Memphis, Tennessee. A representative American rock and roll singer. He was familiar with the blues, a type of black music from the South, from an early age. While working as a truck driver, he recorded at his own expense, which was discovered by the president of Sun Records, who was looking for a white singer who could sing rhythm and blues like a black person. He made his record debut in 1954. His recording of "That's All Right Mama" in 1954 became a hit and he became famous overnight. In 1955, he moved to RCA Records, and established his rock and roll style with "Heartbreak Hotel" released in 1956. He rode the wave of rock and roll popularity and was called "the king of rock." He made his film debut in 1956 with "Love Me Tenderly." He appeared in many films, including "Blue Hawaii," which featured his hit songs. His popularity waned in the mid-1960s, but he returned to singing and film in 1969. Although great promise was expected of him, he died suddenly at the young age of 42.

アメリカを代表するロックンロール歌手。幼少期より南部の黒人音楽であるブルースに親しむ。トラックの運転手をしながら，自費でレコーディングしたものを，リズム・アンド・ブルースを黒人のように歌える白人歌手を求めていたサン・レコードの社長に見出され，1954年にレコードデビュー。1954年に吹き込んだ『ザッツ・オール・ライト・ママ』がヒットして一躍有名になる。1955年 RCAレコードに移籍，1956年に発売された『ハートブレイク・ホテル』でロックンロールスタイルを確立。以後ロックンロール流行の波に乗り，「ロックの王者」と呼ばれた。1956年『やさしく愛して』で映画デビュー。ヒット曲をからめた『ブルー・ハワイ』など数多くの作品に出演した。1960年代半ばに人気は下火となったが，1969年から再び歌と映画にカムバック。活躍が期待されたが，42歳の若さで急死した。
