Byzantine Emperor (reigned 395-408). In 383, he was given the title of Augustus (legitimate emperor) by his father, Theodosius I, and in 394 was entrusted with the eastern part of the Roman Empire. After his father's death in 395, he divided the empire with his brother Honorius, and became the Eastern Roman Emperor. However, he was sickly and had little influence on politics, and real power was in the hands of his wife Eudoxia and his aides Rufinus and Eutropius. They clashed with Stilicho, the Germanic commander-in-chief of the Western Roman Empire, over the ownership of Dacia and Macedonia, but in 396, the Germanic Visigoths, led by Alaric, invaded the empire and plundered, leading to the temporary occupation of Constantinople and causing chaos in his reign for five years.
