A Shingon sect Chisan temple located in Osu, Naka-ku, Nagoya. It is commonly known as Shinpukuji Temple and is also called Hoshoin. Its mountain name is Kitanosan. It began in the 14th century when Noshin built a temple in Osu-sho, Nakajima-gun, Mino Province (Hashima City, Gifu Prefecture) to spread esoteric Buddhism. In 1350 (Shohei 5, Kan'o 1), it became a place of imperial prayer for Emperor Gomurakami, and in 1352, a statue of Shokannon (a Bodhisattva of Mercy), said to have been made by Kukai, was moved from Shitennoji Temple in Settsu Province (Osaka Prefecture) to become the principal image. The temple's influence later declined due to wars and natural disasters, but in 1612 (Keicho 17), it was moved to its current location by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and it flourished thereafter under the protection of the Tokugawa family. It has a large collection of classical texts, including the national treasures "Kanrin Gakushi Shishu", "Kojiki", "Chogyokushu", and "Shokashi", as well as the nationally designated Important Cultural Properties "Honcho Monzui" and "Shomonki", all of which are known as Shinpuku-ji versions (Osu versions). The temple street, known as Banshoji Street, is a popular entertainment district. [Kanaoka Hidetomo] This Shingon sect temple is said to have been founded in the 14th century. Its official name is Kitanosan Shinpukuji Hoshoin. It is affectionately known as "Kannon-san." The temple was burned down twice, once in the great fire of Osu in the Meiji era and once in the Second World War. The current building was rebuilt in 1970.
