The central city of the San Joaquin River basin in central California, USA. It is located between the Coast Range and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It was founded in 1872 with the opening of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Stretching about 160 km from north to south, Fresno is the region with the most intensive agriculture in the USA, thanks to its fertile soil, warm climate, and well-equipped irrigation facilities. The city processes agricultural and livestock products such as cotton, grains, grapes, and other fruits, and sugar cane, and supplies agricultural machinery. It is also a base for tourists to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is home to California State University, Fresno. Population: 494,665 (2010).
