Frogmouth - Frogmouth

Japanese:
Frogmouth - Frogmouth

A general term for birds belonging to the order Nightjars and family Podargidae. There are 12 species in the family Podargidae. They are found in southern India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, New Guinea, Australia, etc. They are 20-50 cm long, with a flattened, hook-shaped beak and bristly at the base. They are named after their very large mouths. Many species are found in two types, a reddish brown type and a gray brown type, regardless of gender or age. They are nocturnal, jumping from stumps and low branches to the ground to catch and eat insects, centipedes, frogs, etc. They usually live in pairs of two birds, one male and one female, in forests. They build their nests in the fork of a horizontal branch on the tree, and are dish-shaped. They lay one or two white eggs, which the male and female take turns incubating.
