Trumpet Creeper - Trumpet Creeper

Japanese: ノウゼンカズラ - のうぜんかずら
Trumpet Creeper - Trumpet Creeper

A deciduous vine of the Bignoniaceae family (APG classification: Bignoniaceae). The vines grow long and have short aerial roots that allow it to climb other things. The leaves are opposite, odd-pinnate, and compound, 10-20 cm long. There are 5-9 leaflets, ovate, 3-7 cm long, with coarse sawtooth edges. In July and August, the panicles bloom at the ends of the branches, and beautiful yellow-red flowers bloom. The corolla is broad and funnel-shaped, 6-7 cm in diameter, with five lobes and a rounded tip. There are four stamens, two of which are long. Fruiting is rare. Native to China. It is planted in gardens, and there is a superstition that if you get nectar in your eyes, you will go blind. It is propagated by cuttings, layers, and division. A closely related species, Trumpet Creeper, C. radicans Seem., has compound leaves with 9 to 11 leaflets and produces long, funnel-shaped orange-red flowers measuring 4 cm in diameter.

[Yoshio Kobayashi October 20, 2021]

The Bignoniaceae family is distributed mainly in the tropics, and 82 genera and approximately 870 species are known as of 2018. In Japan, some species are planted for decorative purposes, such as the Trumpet Creeper and Catalpa.
